Magnitude Heritage

A look at the past

Handmade bedding since 1930

Magnitude's story begins in the heart of West Flanders, with Alouis Corneille. As director of a small mattress fabric weaving mill in the Kortrijk region, he supplies local upholsterers with high-quality fabrics. However, it was his son Gérard who sowed the seeds of what eventually became Magnitude.

At the young age of eighteen, Gérard sets out on his own. Using his savings, he buys a whole train carriage full of rabbit hair. In a borrowed car and a suit he just bought, he travels across the country all the way to the province of Limburg. His dream is simple: building his own mattress business from the beginning.

From wartime to reconstruction

When war breaks out, Gérard's young company named Ets. Gérard Corneille and the brand name Anker, already has sixty employees. He refuses to work for the German army, which forces him to flee. After the war, driven by resilience and a belief in quality, he rebuilds the company from scratch.

In 1955, his son Carlo joins the family business. He pursues growth, innovates where necessary and helps lay the basis for a strong and contemporary product range. His actions lay the foundation for a brand that transcends generations.

The creation of Magnitude

In the 1980s, Vincent, the next generation, insists on expanding the collection with elegant, upholstered bedroom furniture. Initially, the competition meets his idea with scepticism, but he perseveres. Together with his wife, Cathérine Silence, an interior designer with a keen eye for detail, he develops a unique style and convinces renowned fabric manufacturers and designers to contribute to their dream.

This approach pays off: prestigious hotels, including Hotel Metropole, Hilton and Sheraton, discover Magnitude's quality and aesthetic.

Highly personalised craftsmanship

Today, Magnitude is synonymous with customisation, elegance and Belgian craftsmanship. Each bed results from a profound respect for craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our upholsterers - some of whom have a background as tailors or stair carpet fitters - finish each piece completely by hand. Master upholsterers, skilled through generations, embrace innovation alongside tradition.

Besides ergonomics and styling, dimensions are an important consideration. An apartment in Knokke requires a minimalist approach, whereas a mansion with high ceilings is a completely different matter. Therefore, one style cannot define Magnitude.

Authentic, pleasantly stubborn and uncompromising

Tried and tested techniques from the past, as yet add value today. For example, we still generously pad our most luxurious mattresses, using special single or double needle machines and internally fastening of the lining.

We consciously opt for natural materials such as virgin wool and cashmere and make the inner structure of our box springs from FSC-certified solid wood. A reversible mattress? That's a matter of course for us, ensuring a longer lifespan and a healthier sleeping environment.

A Magnitude is something you experience

You don't buy a Magnitude online. It's an experience which begins in the showroom. That's why you'll find our beds only at selected dealers. Our short, reliable delivery times and close cooperation with our dealer network ensure a service which is as personal as the bed itself. Your night. Your comfort. Your story. Because the night is yours.
